Pat Haden, USC’s New Athletic Director, Replaces Mike Garrett

Pat Haden will replace Mike Garrett as the new athletic director at USC

Pat Haden, a former University of Southern California quarterback and the eponymous member of Riordan Lewis & Haden Equity Partners, has been appointed athletic director at his alma mater by incoming USC President Max Nikias, effective August 3.

Pat Haden

He’s the first member of the prestigious inaugural class of the Private Equity All Pro Team to head back to the sports world so totally. (Private equity protégé Steve Young, a Huntsman Gay Global Capital managing director and former NFL MVP, is an ESPN NFL analyst.)

Haden, who’s been at Riordan Lewis for more than 22 years, will have a limited role at the firm now, it appears. A statement from the firm congratulated Haden and said it looks forward “to an ongoing relationship with Pat,” who will continue as a board member at portfolio company The Apothecary Shops, as an investor, and as an informal adviser.

Haden replaces Mike Garrett, who left in the wake of scandals involving former Trojans Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo that resulted in the school’s football and basketball program being hit with NCAA and self-imposed sanctions.

Haden was a quarterback for the Trojans in the 1970’s and was named co-MVP of the 1975 Rose Bowl, throwing a game-winning pass on a two-point conversion in an 18-17 victory over Ohio State that gave USC a national championship (skip to the 4:10 mark for the goods). He later led the then Los Angeles Rams to three straight appearances in the NFL playoffs.

Ironically, Haden has served as a color analyst for Notre Dame football broadcasts on NBC. The Irish are one of USC’s arch rivals.
