Someone Registered Fani Willis at Trump Tower

Fulton County DA Fani Willis says somebody submitted a New York voter registration in her name listing her as a Republican living at Trump Tower. Election officials caught it, canceled it and say no vote was cast.

Fani Willis has spent years at the center of Donald Trump’s legal and political universe, so somebody apparently decided her voter registration needed to join the bit. The Fulton County district attorney says an unknown person submitted a New York registration in her name listing her as a Republican who lived at Trump Tower.

Yes, Trump Tower. Not a random Manhattan apartment, not a believable temporary address and not even a subtle joke, but the Fifth Avenue building with Donald Trump’s name literally bolted to the front of it.

Willis learned about the registration after receiving notice from the New York City Board of Elections that officials were canceling it because they believed it was fraudulent. She says she never filled out or signed the application.

According to WSB-TV, the submission contained false information including Willis’s date of birth, political affiliation and signature. It also listed the Fulton County Courthouse as her mailing address, because apparently whoever did this wanted the prank to come with forwarding instructions.

Willis says she has been a lifelong Democrat and has never lived at Trump Tower. She believes the fake registration was an attempt to harass her after years of threats and political attacks tied to her prosecution of Trump and others in Georgia.

The New York City Board of Elections says no ballot was cast using the bogus registration. Officials also said anyone attempting to vote under the registration would have been required to provide identification or other proof of residence.

That means the scheme did not produce an illegal vote, but it may still create legal trouble for whoever submitted it. Willis’s office is now in contact with a New York prosecutor to determine whether criminal charges could be appropriate.

The political symbolism is almost too on-the-nose to be real. Registering one of Trump’s best-known legal adversaries as a Republican resident of Trump Tower is less identity theft and more identity theft written by someone who desperately wanted the audience to understand the joke.

It also arrives in an election environment already saturated with arguments about voter fraud. The irony is that this is an example of election officials catching a suspicious registration before it could become an actual vote, which is not exactly the ending most election-conspiracy threads are built around.

Willis said she wants the situation documented clearly so there is no confusion about her Georgia voter eligibility. That concern is understandable when an apparently forged document suddenly claims a district attorney lives hundreds of miles away in one of the most politically recognizable buildings in America.

Officials have not publicly identified who submitted the registration or established a motive beyond Willis’s belief that it was harassment. There is also no evidence linking Trump, his campaign or anyone at Trump Tower to the filing.

So for now the facts are weird enough without inventing anything extra. Somebody tried to turn Fani Willis into a Trump Tower Republican on paper, New York election officials noticed, and the fake registration died before it ever became a ballot.

That may be the entire story, but it is also a remarkably efficient summary of modern American politics. Even the voter-registration fraud comes with branding.
