There are men who process a bad day by going to bed, and there are men who process a bad day by posting on Truth Social more than 100 times before sunrise, and Donald Trump, fresh off a July 4 celebration evacuated by a severe thunderstorm, attended by crowds whose size his own team described as historic and independent observers described as a problem, and featuring a fireworks show that set the Brooklyn Bridge on fire while he was praising it, chose the second option.
Among those 100-plus posts, per Raw Story, was a list of 75 “accomplishments.” The first item on the list was: “Launched Operation Epic Fury, destroying Iran’s Navy.” This is the war. The war Trump launched in February against Iran, which closed the Strait of Hormuz, spiked oil to $126 a barrel, crashed consumer confidence to levels not seen since 2008, contributed to inflation hitting a three-year high of 4.2 percent, and which Trump spent the preceding four years of his political career explicitly promising not to start, describing foreign military adventures as “stupid stuff abroad” that he would never do. It is listed first. On his list of accomplishments.
The Reflecting Pool, which Trump’s administration spent $19 million renovating in preparation for the America 250 celebration, had to have garbage removed from it Monday morning after July 4 crowds used it as a waste receptacle, per Raw Story’s Luke Russert, who noted on air that visitors to the Mall had apparently treated the renovated national landmark as a bin. The Pool was painted American Flag Blue for the occasion, turned green with algae before the events, and was then filled with visitor garbage during them. The $19 million renovation produced three sequential problems, each one more visible than the last.
Trump posted on Truth Social during the July 4 storm evacuation: “I’M HERE!!!” He then delivered a 37-minute speech declaring America “the crowning achievement of human history.” He then returned to the White House and posted more than 100 times, which is the social media equivalent of a man who has declared victory and cannot stop telling people about it, which is a different thing from victory.
On Sunday Trump also posted about Folarin Balogun, calling the Brazilian referee who gave Balogun the red card “a little bit suspect.” Balogun played. The U.S. lost 4-1 to Belgium.
When the first item on a presidential list of accomplishments is a war the president specifically promised not to start, what exactly is the list measuring?
