JD Vance told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Wednesday: “I don’t care where you came from. I don’t care what your name is. If you are committing fraud against the American people, all of us in public leadership should be trying to stop it and try to throw you in prison for enriching yourself off of the American taxpayer.” Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas posted three words on X: “I’ve got a name for him: Donald Trump.”
Trump made approximately $2 billion in 2025, triple his prior year, with $1.4 billion coming from cryptocurrency ventures he personally promoted, per the reporting confirmed in HuffPost’s August 6 article on Vance’s comments. His personal wealth grew by $2.2 billion during his first year back in the presidency. He was found liable for business fraud in a 2024 New York civil judgment and ordered to pay $350 million. His company, the Trump Organization, was found guilty of tax fraud in 2022. He was convicted of falsifying business records in 2024. He has also pardoned more than 70 people convicted of fraud, some of whom defrauded Americans in the billions of dollars, per Mehdi Hasan’s post on X cited in the HuffPost article. Vance did not specify any of these names during his Laura Ingraham interview.
Vance leads the White House’s anti-fraud task force, a position he has used to refer Democratic governors to the DOJ’s fraud division for investigation, announce holds on state Medicaid payments, and campaign in Maine on the premise that fraud “has festered” under Democratic governance. The DOJ Vance describes as finally getting serious about fraud has also, per a ProPublica analysis cited in HuffPost, quietly dropped more than 23,000 criminal cases during the first six months of the administration, including hundreds of fraud cases and a bribery case against a billionaire whose legal team is led by one of Trump’s personal attorneys.
Political organizer Melanie D’Arrigo responded to the Vance clip on X: “Said, without self-awareness or irony, as Donald Trump tripled his wealth grifting off the presidency over the last year and a half.” Media producer Andrew O’Keefe wrote: “JD Vance announces plan to throw Donald J. Trump into prison.”
Vance said it regardless of the name. The critics supplied the name.
