The Tate brothers were arrested for sex trafficking. MAGA is pressuring Rubio to save them

There are people the MAGA movement goes to bat for and there are people the MAGA movement goes to bat for who have been arrested on sex trafficking charges, and Andrew and Tristan Tate are this week’s version of the second category, with prominent figures on the right applying “mounting pressure” on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to block the brothers’ extradition to the United Kingdom, where British authorities have been seeking to prosecute them.

Andrew Tate, the former kickboxing world champion and social media personality who built an audience of hundreds of millions through “masculine” self-improvement content and who has been on the right’s podcast circuit extensively, was arrested alongside his brother Tristan last week on sex trafficking charges, per Raw Story’s confirmed reporting from The Bulwark. Rubio holds the authority to block or allow the extradition to the United Kingdom, which is the authority that has made him the focus of a campaign from prominent right-wing figures who view the Tates as political prisoners of a globalist establishment rather than defendants in a sex trafficking case.

The Tates have spent the past two years operating from Romania while fighting various legal proceedings in multiple jurisdictions, with their supporters consistently framing each arrest as political persecution and each charge as fabrication. Andrew Tate has described himself as a target of the “matrix” and has used his prosecution as content. His content has been watched billions of times. His audience’s response to this arrest is to pressure the American Secretary of State to block a law enforcement process, which is not how extradition typically works but is how this particular audience understands Rubio’s job.

Rubio is in a position where refusing the extradition produces a diplomatic incident with the United Kingdom, which is America’s closest ally, which is in the middle of adjusting to its seventh prime minister in 10 years. Approving the extradition produces a MAGA backlash against the Secretary of State who blocked nothing. Rubio has not yet publicly said which he will do.

The Tates have not addressed the charges substantively. Their lawyers have described the arrests as political. The UK extradition request remains pending.

When the MAGA movement pressures the Secretary of State to block the extradition of sex trafficking defendants to America’s closest ally, what exactly is the relationship protecting?
