Trump Staffer Throws Drink, Blows Kisses to Crowd

State Department press adviser Britt McHenry was filmed throwing a drink during a Wizards game and leaving to boos while blowing kisses. A second angle appears to show another drink thrown at her immediately before she fires one back.

Britt McHenry left sports media for a job inside the Trump administration, but Wednesday night she found a remarkably efficient way to combine both worlds. The former ESPN reporter and current State Department press adviser went viral after video showed her throwing a drink during a Washington Wizards game and then exiting through a chorus of boos.

The first clip made the incident look fairly simple. McHenry argues with spectators, grabs a cup, throws liquid toward someone behind her and then starts making her way out while people in the section react loudly.

Then a second camera angle complicated the story. In that footage, someone seated behind McHenry appears to throw a beverage in her direction first, after which she bends down, grabs a cup and fires one back toward the crowd.

That does not transform an NBA drink toss into a State Department-approved conflict-resolution technique, but it does matter when deciding who initiated the liquid portion of the evening. The full video suggests the confrontation had already escalated well beyond ordinary trash talk before McHenry launched her response.

Sources close to McHenry told TMZ that people sitting behind her and her male guest had been making inappropriate comments about Winnie Harlow, the fiancée of Bucks player and former Wizard Kyle Kuzma. Those same sources also said misogynistic comments were directed at McHenry, though the videos do not independently establish every remark that was made before the drink exchange.

Other fans in the section were already turning against McHenry before the throw. The new footage captures people calling her names, demanding that she be removed and chanting for her to leave while arena staff appeared to be trying to manage the argument.

Once McHenry started walking out, the optics somehow got even more made-for-social-media. Spectators booed, rally towels flew in her direction, and McHenry repeatedly turned around to blow kisses at the crowd like a professional wrestling villain who had just discovered diplomatic immunity does not extend to Section 112.

She was later filmed speaking with security near an exit and asking what she had done. TMZ’s sources insist she was not formally kicked out and left voluntarily, while other accounts describe her as being escorted out, so even the exit strategy has competing versions.

What is not disputed is McHenry’s current role. She works as a press adviser at the U.S. State Department after previous stints at ESPN, Fox News Media and local television, which means a courtside argument at an NBA game instantly became a Trump-administration story too.

There is also a strange symmetry to the whole thing. McHenry once covered athletes behaving badly from the media side of the barrier; now she is the government official in the viral arena clip while other outlets slow the video down frame by frame.

The incident happened during Washington’s home opener against Milwaukee, a game the Wizards won 128-116. That result is now mostly trivia because the internet got a much easier highlight package: argument, thrown drink, boos, flying towels, blown kisses and security.

No public reporting indicates that McHenry was arrested or charged in connection with the confrontation. The State Department also had not publicly announced disciplinary action in the reporting reviewed for this article.

So the clean version is less dramatic than the first clip made it look but much stranger overall. McHenry did throw a drink, another angle appears to show one coming at her first, and the resulting walkout looked less like a diplomatic retreat than a heel turn at WrestleMania.
