Philippine authorities say they are investigating allegations that Thomas Markle Sr. possessed child sexual abuse material after his son reported finding images at a former home. Markle Sr. denies the allegations and calls them “sick lies.”
A deeply disturbing allegation involving Meghan Markle’s estranged father has opened a new investigation in the Philippines and revived questions Meghan says she first confronted years ago. Philippine justice officials now say a government task force is looking into claims that Thomas Markle Sr. possessed child sexual abuse material.
The allegation came from Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., who says he found a large stash of images among possessions left at their father’s former home in Cebu. News reports have described the number as potentially reaching into the hundreds or thousands, although investigators have not publicly verified the scope of what was allegedly discovered.
Thomas Markle Sr., 82, denies possessing the material. He has called the accusations “sick lies,” and there has been no criminal conviction or public finding establishing that the images belonged to him.
The Philippine government has nevertheless confirmed that authorities are examining the matter. Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty told Reuters that the country’s anti-trafficking and anti-online-sexual-abuse task force in Cebu is investigating, moving the story beyond a family accusation and into an official inquiry.
Meghan responded Friday with an unusually direct statement saying she was “deeply distressed” by what had emerged and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She also revealed a separate piece of history that immediately made the story much larger than a single allegation from this week.
According to Meghan, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018 containing what she called “troubling and disturbing allegations” about her father. She says the letter was later shared with her and that she was assured the claims were being investigated.
Meghan did not publicly spell out every allegation contained in that 2018 letter, and current reporting does not establish that the earlier allegations were identical to the material now being investigated in the Philippines. That distinction is important because two disturbing stories can be related without being the same accusation.
She also tied the revelation to her long estrangement from her father, saying her decision to keep him from having contact with her children was intended to protect them. The statement reframes years of public speculation about the family rupture around concerns Meghan says she had privately known about for much longer.
For years, the Markle family conflict has been treated as royal soap opera: wedding invitations, tabloid interviews, leaked letters and bitter relatives speaking through the press. The new allegations are in an entirely different category and do not belong in the same snarky bucket as palace feuds or awkward Christmas invitations.
That is why the legal status matters so much. Thomas Markle Sr. is accused, he denies the allegation, Philippine authorities are investigating, and neither the current claims nor the older 2018 allegations have been publicly proven in court.
The case also raises questions about what authorities in Britain knew in 2018 and what became of that inquiry. Meghan says she trusted that officials were protecting other families, while her new statement suggests she believed the concerns were serious enough to influence decisions about her own children.
For now, the most concrete development is the Philippine investigation. Authorities will have to determine what material exists, where it came from, who possessed it and whether any laws were broken before the allegations can move from shocking headlines to established facts.
The royal connection guarantees enormous attention, but the core of the story is not celebrity scandal. It is an allegation involving child sexual abuse material, a formal investigation and a father who categorically denies the claims against him.
