VIDEO: Man Appears to Slap 18-Year-Old Poll Volunteer

Police in Laconia, New Hampshire, are investigating after video showed a man arguing with an 18-year-old Turning Point Action volunteer at a polling place and apparently striking him.

Election Day tension spilled into a New Hampshire polling place Tuesday when an argument between a voter and an 18-year-old political volunteer appeared to turn physical. Laconia police say they are investigating the incident, which was captured on video outside the Woodland Heights polling location.

The footage shows a man arguing with a volunteer working with Turning Point Action, a conservative get-out-the-vote organization. During the confrontation, the man appears to slap or strike the teenager before the two are separated.

Laconia Mayor Mike Bordes posted the video publicly and called the incident “absolutely disgusting and completely unacceptable.” Police have not announced an arrest in the reporting available so far, and the investigation remains open.

New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan happened to have visited the same polling location shortly before the confrontation. He said there was “no place” for assaults at polling sites and emphasized that political passions do not justify putting hands on another person.

That point is worth keeping simple. Election Day produces arguments every cycle, but the whole system depends on people being able to vote, volunteer and disagree without turning the parking lot into a boxing undercard.

Scanlan said he had been made aware of other tense interactions around polling places but described the statewide election as generally smooth. The Laconia incident stood out precisely because it appeared to cross the line from heated speech into physical contact.

The political affiliation or motivation of the man shown confronting the volunteer has not been publicly established in the reporting cited here. That matters because the clip is already being shared through partisan channels, and a viral video can acquire a full ideological biography long before police finish asking basic questions.

Turning Point Action supporters have described the incident as an attack on a conservative volunteer. That is a fair description of who the apparent victim was working for, but it does not automatically establish why the other man acted the way he did.

The video is still powerful because viewers do not need a complex policy background to understand what they are watching. An adult appears to strike an 18-year-old volunteer at a polling location while people nearby are trying to conduct an election.

If police determine a crime occurred, the case will move through the normal legal process. Until then, the responsible headline is also the strongest one: there is video, police are investigating, and someone appears to have taken an Election Day argument way too far.
