Austin police are investigating a Halloween-week attack that sounds less like a normal crime report and more like somebody fed random 2026 headlines into a slot machine. A man dressed as a zombie is accused of stabbing two people at a coffee shop, fleeing in a pickup and crashing into a robotaxi.
The attack happened Wednesday night at Buzz Mill Coffee in southeast Austin shortly before a comedy show. Police say 20-year-old Shankar Temple Grace had been causing a disturbance before two adults were stabbed.
Emergency crews took both victims to trauma centers. One was initially reported with life-threatening injuries, while the other also required hospital treatment, and later reporting said both were stable.
Grace allegedly fled the scene in a pickup truck. Police say he then struck an unoccupied autonomous vehicle, identified in local reporting as a Tesla Cybercab, because apparently even the getaway portion of this case needed a technology subplot.
The alleged robotaxi collision did not end the chase. Officers later found Grace on a walking trail about three miles from the coffee shop and arrested him.
He was booked into the Travis County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Those are criminal allegations, and Grace has not been convicted.
Police have not publicly established a motive or said whether Grace knew the people who were stabbed. Investigators are still piecing together what happened inside the coffee shop before the attack.
Witnesses said the suspect was wearing zombie makeup and a costume. That detail has made the story spread nationally because it creates one of those rare headlines where adding more facts somehow makes the situation sound less believable.
The victims are the serious part of the story, and the absurdity belongs everywhere else. Two people were hurt, one badly, and there is nothing funny about being attacked while spending an evening at a coffee shop.
The getaway, however, is difficult to write with a straight face. A zombie-costumed stabbing suspect allegedly fleeing Austin and colliding with an empty robotaxi is the sort of thing that would have required three separate science-fiction premises a decade ago.
Austin has become one of the country’s biggest testing grounds for autonomous vehicles, so the robotaxi involvement is not completely random. It is still an astonishingly specific object to crash into during an alleged escape from a Halloween-week stabbing.
There is also no indication the autonomous vehicle caused the incident or had anyone inside it. The Cybercab appears to have been an extremely expensive and very futuristic bystander.
Police say the case remains under investigation and have asked anyone with information to come forward. For now, Grace faces serious felony charges while investigators determine what led to the violence.
The headline sounds like satire, but the charges are real. Welcome to 2026, where the police blotter can contain a zombie, a stabbing, a pickup truck and a robotaxi before anyone even reaches the second paragraph.
