Candidate Had 3 Beers Before Viral TV Meltdown

Indiana Democrat Jaime West says she drank three beers before the TV interview where she said she would “fire all Republicans,” attacked MAGA voters and ended with “We have guns too.”

The viral Indiana candidate interview that already looked like somebody had accidentally aired the group chat now has one more detail. Jaime West says she drank three beers before sitting down for the television appearance in which she talked about firing Republicans, insulted MAGA voters and closed with “We have guns too.”

West, a Democrat running for the Indiana House, acknowledged the drinking during an interview with Piers Morgan after viewers repeatedly questioned whether she appeared impaired in the original local-TV forum. She said she had three beers because she was nervous about speaking before what she expected would be a heavily Republican audience.

That admission immediately turned a weird campaign clip into a much easier headline. Political candidates have survived bad interviews before, but “yes, I had three beers first” is not normally the media-training answer designed to make the story disappear.

During the original forum, West was asked what unpopular decision she would make if elected. She responded that she would “fire all Republicans,” then went on to describe MAGA supporters as racist and unintelligent.

She also accused a local sheriff’s nephew of threatening her and ended part of her message by saying, “We have guns too.” The sheriff later disputed the nephew allegation by pointing out a fairly inconvenient detail: he said he does not have any nephews.

West has not backed away from the core politics behind her comments. She told Morgan that she still stands by much of what she said, even while acknowledging that drinking beforehand was not ideal.

Her defense is essentially that nerves led her to have a few beers, not that alcohol invented the opinions. That may be politically honest, but it also means the cleanup interview cannot rely on the traditional “I misspoke” escape hatch.

The viral clip has spread far beyond the Indiana district where West is actually running. National conservative media seized on it as an example of Democratic hostility toward Republicans, while plenty of people online focused less on ideology and more on the unmistakably strange delivery.

People reports that West appeared to slur some of her words during the interview. West says she was coherent and knew what she was talking about, arguing that she remained fully capable of discussing Indiana politics despite the beers.

There is no suggestion that West was driving or doing anything illegal by drinking before the event. The political problem is simpler: candidates are generally expected to wait until after the televised forum before reaching for the campaign beverage.

The episode is especially damaging because it bundled several separate controversies into one short appearance. She insulted an entire political faction, made a disputed allegation about a sheriff’s family member, referenced guns and then later confirmed there had been alcohol involved beforehand.

If a consultant had been asked to design a viral-news obstacle course, they probably would have stopped at two of those. West managed to clear the whole thing in one sitting.

Her campaign now has to decide whether the attention helps or hurts in a heavily Republican environment. On one hand, she has national name recognition most state legislative candidates would never dream of getting; on the other, most of that recognition currently comes with the phrase “three beers.”

West says she intends to stay in the race, and nothing about the interview automatically disqualifies her from doing so. Voters will decide whether they see the episode as a nervous candidate making a messy mistake or as evidence that she should not be anywhere near elected office.

Either way, the clip was already one of the strangest political interviews of the cycle. The fact that the candidate later confirmed there really were three beers involved somehow made it more understandable and more unbelievable at the same time.
