Harry lost his legal challenge against the British government over security in 2025. The Home Office’s position was that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee would assess protection on a case-by-case basis, that the committee’s decisions were lawful, and that Harry did not have an automatic right to publicly funded police protection. The courts agreed. Harry accepted this in the sense that he continued pursuing it privately, which is a different kind of acceptance.
He is now bringing Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet to Britain next month for the family’s first joint visit in four years. According to GB News, the King has offered them a royal residence and security arrangements, and may contribute personally to the cost of their protection. King Charles has cancer. He has been in treatment since February 2024. He is spending his own money to fund the security operation required for his son to visit his grandchildren because the government process that is supposed to handle this has not yet responded to Harry’s application, which was filed within the required 30-day notice period.
The Royal and VIP Executive Committee includes representatives from the royal household, the Metropolitan Police, the Home Office, the Cabinet Office, and the Foreign Office. It is, in other words, a committee with representatives from five government bodies, assembled for the purpose of making decisions about exactly this situation. Harry filed his paperwork. The committee has not replied. The visit is in three weeks.
Harry’s stated reason for the visit, per GB News, centers on the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in Birmingham in 2027, which is a legitimate reason and also one that comes with Netflix documentation rights attached, as these occasions tend to.
William, according to GB News commentary, takes a “more sceptical view” of arrangements that appear to grant Harry special treatment. William is the future king. He attended three days of Ascot. He sent England a World Cup message. He has a full calendar. His position on his brother’s logistics is described as cautious, his position on the monarchy’s institutional integrity as clear, and his position on the committee’s failure to respond to a 30-day-notice application within 30 days as, apparently, the default.
When the king with cancer is personally funding his son’s security because the five-agency committee assembled to handle this has not responded, what is the committee for?
