Trump promised ‘really big news’ tonight at 9 p.m. He is also bombing Iran. Iran released a hostage

There are news days and there are news days where the president announces a primetime White House address promising “really big news” about “free and fair elections” for 9 p.m. ET, while US Central Command simultaneously expands missile strikes into northern Iran, Iran simultaneously threatens to hit Arab neighbors’ energy infrastructure if the US hits its power plants, Iran simultaneously releases an American citizen held captive since 2024 as a “gesture of good will,” and the national weather service simultaneously issues flash flood warnings across Texas and wildfire smoke turns skies orange over millions of Americans, which is Thursday.

Trump teased the primetime address to reporters this week, promising “really big news” about “free and fair elections” and adding “it doesn’t get bigger,” per Fox News. The address is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET at the White House. The subject is election integrity legislation or election security measures, per Fox News’s advance billing. Trump also told reporters it is the “most important thing we’ve done,” which is the description he has given to several things this year, including the Iran ceasefire that lasted 21 days and the Freedom Fuel gas network whose first station charges more per gallon than it did under Biden.

The Iran campaign expanded Thursday, with US forces striking targets in northern Iran, per the Fox News live blog updated at 12:04 p.m. ET today. Trump has also threatened to target Iran’s power plants and bridges, a threat that Iran’s military responded to by warning it would hit energy infrastructure across neighboring countries if the US proceeds, which means the countries Trump described at the NATO summit in Ankara as being “on our side” are being threatened by Iran in response to what the US is doing on their behalf. Iran released American hostage Shea Houdini, who had been held on espionage charges since 2024. Trump called it a “gesture of good will.” Iran then continued striking US-allied shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which is the gesture of good will from a country whose IRGC Trump said has lost 90 percent of its weapons capability and which keeps firing them.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in an interview Thursday, described the US-Iran conflict as having entered its “most dangerous phase,” which is the assessment of the foreign minister of the country being bombed, who nevertheless released a hostage today and called it a gesture, which is either de-escalation or extraordinary diplomatic compartmentalization and it is not yet clear which.

The primetime address is at 9 p.m. ET. The Iran strikes are ongoing. The hostage is home. The skies in Texas are orange from wildfire smoke.

When the president promises the most important news of his presidency at 9pm while bombing one country and releasing a hostage from another on the same Thursday, which event is the address about?
