And then there are transparency initiatives that arrive the same week it becomes publicly known that the National Health Service has been charged over eleven million pounds over fifteen years to store ambulances in a warehouse owned by the King’s Duchy of Lancaster, at which point the transparency initiative takes on a specific quality, like a man who has decided, entirely of his own accord, to show you his receipts, because other receipts are coming.
King Charles published his personal tax bill today, becoming the first British monarch in history to do so. According to GB News, a Palace aide told The Telegraph it was the King’s “clear wish and instruction” to subject royal finances to heightened public scrutiny. The King voluntarily pays income tax at the top rate of 45 percent on all private earnings and capital gains on applicable assets. He has done this since he was Prince of Wales. The difference now is that the number is public, which the Palace describes as a “very significant leap forward” in transparency, and which it is, in the specific sense that a leap forward from the previous position was very easy because the previous position was complete opacity.
The NHS ambulance situation was reported by GB News this week. The Duchy of Lancaster, the private estate that provides the King’s income, has been charging the NHS over fifteen years to store ambulances in a London warehouse. The ambulances that respond to cardiac arrests and strokes and accidents were stored in a building from which the King’s private estate collected commercial rent. The National Audit Office, separately, noted that Prince Andrew has been subletting three cottages at Royal Lodge while paying peppercorn rent to the Crown Estate, with the difference functioning as personal income. Both of these arrangements are legal. Neither of them were in the brochure for the transparency initiative.
A YouGov poll cited by GB News found that almost half of British adults feel the Royal Family does not represent good value for money. This is the poll result that tends to precede announcements about transparency initiatives. It preceded this one by approximately one news cycle.
The King has cancer. He has been in active treatment since February 2024. He appointed a new prime minister this week. He is publishing his tax bill. He attended three days of Ascot last week. His schedule suggests a man who treats rest as something that happens to other people.
