There are warnings designed to frighten people and there are warnings that get read back to you as a campaign promise, and Stephen Miller produced the second kind Sunday with a Truth Social post that traveled across the internet at a speed his messaging team did not anticipate.
Miller posted, per HuffPost: “Should Democrats regain power, it’s game over. 12 more justices on SCOTUS, two new Democrat states. They’re going to get rid of ICE.” He meant this as an Armageddon scenario, the kind of warning designed to mobilize Republican voters against an existential threat. The internet received it as a list of demands. “Is he threatening us with a good time? Because it sounds like he’s threatening us with a good time,” wrote one commenter, capturing the response with the kind of precision that a paid consultant could not improve on. “All good reasons to vote for Democrats. Thanks, Stevie!” wrote another. “Sounds awesome doesn’t it? Can’t wait,” wrote a third.
Miller is the architect of the administration’s hardline immigration policy, the man whose name appears in the policy documents behind the TPS terminations and the deportation flights, and he has spent a decade describing the dismantling of ICE as a national catastrophe to an audience he assumed shared his priorities. The audience that replied to this particular post did not share his priorities. They read his warning, identified each individual item as something they wanted, and thanked him for the itinerary.
The post arrived the same week three democratic socialist congressional candidates swept New York’s primaries, the same week Mamdani attributed his sweep to Allah and conservative media spent 24 hours on the theological implications, and the same week Christopher Rufo described the progressive movement’s trajectory as “Third-Worldism,” a term he intended as an alarm and which has had roughly the alarm-generating power of a calendar reminder. Miller’s contribution to this messaging environment was to compile the right’s worst fears into a numbered list and publish it, apparently confident that the list would read as a threat rather than as the most efficient possible advertisement for the other side.
The replies kept coming. “Where do I get extra ballots to make this happen?” asked one user, treating Miller’s warning as a voter registration drive. Nobody on the Democratic side needed to write a single word of opposition messaging this week. Miller wrote it for them, free of charge, with his own name attached.
